This is Jackie Chan at his finest. Not only does this prove him as an action man even in his 50s, but also as an actor. The movie opens where Wing Chan (played by the great Jackie) is getting drunk and puking in an alley. Then approaching him is a young man, Frank Cheng (played by Nicholas Tse, boyfriend of Faye Wong). He tells him to turn his Pain Into Power. Then he recalls everything that happened a year ago. It all starts when he stops a hostage situation in front of a bank. The terrorist is holding 2 hostages at gun point and has a grenade. Despite not much action to this, the intesity of what Jackie does to resolve the issue (not going to spoil that one) still has the audience on their feets and keeps them excited. Then later, a group of strange punks rob a bank and use it to ambush the police. Jackie then vows to catch the criminals and assembles a team to catch them. He enters the enemy HQ and one by one, each of his team mates are ambused to the point where they are held hostage by the gang and use them as a means of toying with Jackie. However, Jackie fails to save the team and is then kicked off the force and becomes an alcoholic (sorry, he doesn't do Suiken here). Frank Cheng comes into the picture as his new partner and slowly convinces him to come back onto the force to settle unfinished business, and they finally form their partnership and show that Jackie still has something to prove to not the force, but to the criminals that tormented him. I personally think this is not only one of the best movies in the Police Story line up (though it's not related to any of the previous ones), but one of Jackie Chan's best movies ever. You really get to see Jackie Chan shine as an actor because his character is really human, and not really the "human special effect" you see in his other movies. Hell, I'd say it also proves him as a good techno singer if you hear the ending song. I strongly reccomend this movie to ALL fans of movies. I personally don't see this movie coming to America because I don't think mainstream American audiences would want to see Jackie Chan in such a dark movie in which he is portrayed as a human being. Plus, a lot of my Hong Kong friends told me that the nature of the gang was to be some social message that non-Hong Kong people would ever understand which is another possible reason why we may never see an offical American release. I hope such claims are not true because I would still be willing to see this in theatres despite already owning the DVD.
