Description
After the death of his mother at the hands of the evil robot Count Mecha, young Tetsuro has become a delinquent street urchin who dreams only of revenge. Tetsuro lives in a far future world in which humans have the choice to travel to another planet where they can exchange their bodies for immortal, robotic counterparts. His goal is to someday acquire (through theft) enough money to board the Galaxy Express 999, a train which is capable of traveling through space, and which will take him to the planet of robots. One day, after escaping from the police, he meets the beautiful Maetel, who resembles his mother. She offers to take him on the Galaxy Express 999 to get a robotic body and to get revenge on Count Mecha. Along the journey, the two meet many varied people (including Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas), and Tetsuro learns what it means to be human.

The best out of the 3 movies, I would suggest buying this movie without even seeing the other 2, unless your a die hard fan of the series. The quality was real good the only small complaint I have is the menu is in Japanese so its hard to navigate. The reason I liked this movie so much is it explained alot of stuff from the series, like what Meatre's true purpose for traveling with Tetsuro is. Another great thing is you dont have to see the series to understand the movie, Tetsuro's origin is summed up and they visit a couple of planets just like in the series.

The set is very good and even widescreen, which may well be sourced from a good quality original DVDs, so this is identical. The main thing left to review is basically the subs. The subs are good HKs and very understandable despite some awkward translations at times. Names are close, but some are a little off like Hook=Harlock and Emmeraldes is translated as it sounds. In all, a good release.

Classic Matsumoto! A great story of a young man who takes the journey of his life in order to take revenge for the murder of his mother. With the help of Maetel, Tetsuro boards Galaxy Express 999, an interstellar steam engine train. He wants to find a mechanical body in order to kill the robot that hunted and brutally murdered his mother for sport. In his travels he comes face to face with Tochiro, Queen Emeraldas and Captain Harlock and he decides not only does he not want a mechanical body, but he wants to destroy the planet that provides the mechanical bodies. This brings him to the planet Maetel and the final confrontation with the evil Queen Millenia. I used to only buy either AC/MI or FX titles. This is the first AV title I have purchased and it does not disappoint. The feature is in widescreen and the video is beautiful. There seem to be rare moments of pixellation in battle scenes. The audio is not seperated into channels but that is not a necessity. The subtitles seem to be dead on except for a few name mistakes(Maetel-Maeter,Harlock-Hook), but if you know the characters this is not a bother. ALL dialogue is translated and there is NO engrish. Character art is pure Matsumoto. I think this is one of the finest animated features I ever saw and a must for Harlock/Yamato/Queen Emeraldas fans.
