Galaxy Express 999 TV Part 1 (1 - 16)
Our Price: $10.00 (MSRP: $29.98)
Description
In a distant future, Tetsuro is a human boy who wants his body replaced with a robotic one. This is possible, but to do so he has to reach the Immortal Planet onboard the space train Galaxy Express 999. Maetel, a beautiful and mysterious blonde woman dressed in Russian style, joins him in the long journey through space. Every episode sees our heroes arriving in a new planet's space train station.
Leiji Matsumoto gold. This series is definitely worth your time, and more. The video is immaculate for being from circa 1978. The sound isn't perfect, but again, 1978. The characters have a lot of depth and they go through a good amount of developement within the first 16 episodes, and this show goes for 113! Don't let the subtitle reviews discourage you, they are very good for an HK box (and I've lived through the subs on the Mobile Suit Gundam TV Boxset ^_^). They have few spelling errors and some of the grammar is a bit odd, but that's only once in awhile. Once you get past the slightly outdated animation style (which is great for its time), you have a perfect story, which I'm not going to tell you about, so you'll have to find out for yourself!

I have wanted to see this show every since I saw the movies Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999. So when I saw these DVDs here I bought them almost instantly. Here is what I thought of them.
Video: The video is just fine. It certainly isn't what you might call DVD quality, but that is just fine for this show. In fact, it looks rather good, considering the show's age (it was first on TV in 1978, I think). There are no real problems, and it looked just as good, maybe even a little better, than I thought it would. It looks just fine for this show.
Sound: The sound quality is the same as the video quality. Again, not DVD quality, but it is still just fine and has no problems.
Subtitles: The subtitles are flawed, but are okay. They misspelled the main female character's name. Her name is Meatel, but they spelled it Meater and sometimes they would spell the name of Tetsuro, the main character, as Tetruro or Tetruso. There is also some bad grammar and misspelled words mixed in, but it is never too bad and you can always understand what they are talking about. Overall, the subtitles are are not bad, but are not great, either. They are simply "okay".
Character Design: I like the art style on the characters, but this is an area where the age of this series shows. The characters and their animations, which are by no means bad looking, still do not look as good as the ones in newer animes, and I hate to say it, but they pale in comparison to shows like Berserk and Escaflowne. Still, they look fine and I never had any problems with the way they looked.
Story: The story is great. Basically, a boy, Tetsuro, and his mother are on the earth in the distant future, and want to go to a planet where they can get machine bodies so they can live longer. His mother is killed, but he is rescued by a women named Meatel (Meater in the subtitles). He kills his mother's murderer and then gets a ticket for the Galaxy Express from Meatel. Him and Meatel get on the Galaxy Express and head for the planet where Tetsuro can get his machine body and so the story begins. The movies are just summaries of what happened in the show's 120 episodes, so the show's story feels much more complete and there are a lot of events that didn't happen in the movies. Keep in mind that this set is just the first 16 of the show's 120 episodes, so the story is far from over.
Enjoyability: Despite the show's few flaws, it is an absolute blast to watch. I can't get enough of this show and I highly recommend it to any anime fan. If you don't mind the somewhat old look of the series, then you will be completely enthralled by its likable charcters and excellent story.
