Elysium

Intro:
More and more anime production companies have experimented with completely computer generated animation. Elysium is one of these films. Based in a world where mankind has space exploration abilities, Elysium is the name of the alien race with whom earth must fight in order to remain free.

Packaging:
The DVD is packaged in a regular clear DVD case with a “push here” center that securely holds the DVD in place inside the package. The cover art features the five main characters and two mecha robots on the front cover. The back cover features two screen shots and a picture of the four other mecha robots from the anime. The stand out feature of the packaging is the picture on the inside of the case, which shows through the clear DVD case. It is the same picture as on the back, but enlarged to show detail. The back also features a description of the anime in Chinese, but not English.

Overall, the packaging is well made and fairly attractive.

Video:
The video is a perfect copy of a Region 2 DVD and features no problems during playback. The only problems I faced were the dark DARK colors and the brightness of the film’s video. Many of the shots, specifically around the 17 minute mark, are so dark the characters can hardly be seen. This may or may not have been on purpose.

The computer generated animation, which is becoming more and more popular, is smooth and attractive in Elysium and, though it is not on par with Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Elysium is still very well made and fun to watch. The colors are all bright and sharp (except for the single dark scene I talk about above) and the animation is easy to see and clearly presented.
Overall, the video is worth watching as it is some of the most interesting animation being attempted today!

Audio:
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 only. For fans with only a television, the 5 channels of audio should play through the two speakers, but for fans with a surround sound system, the audio is amazing. The 5 channels of audio easily fill a room and allow the viewer to hear even the slightest change in action on screen. The explosions, gunfights, and sword fights resonate through the speakers and sound amazing.

The dialogue is recorded at a decent volume and is easy to hear. The background effects, thanks to the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio are also easy to hear and enjoy. Overall, a great audio!

Subtitles:
Since this is a copy of a Region 2 DVD, the subtitles seem to be really well made. There are a few grammatical, punctuation, and capitalization errors, but overall, the subtitles feature very little “Engrish.” All of Elysium’s subtitles are presented in “easy to see” white letters at the bottom of the screen. The subtitles, while not always perfect, feature a very “readable” English that helps the viewer understand all that is going on. Overall, good subtitles.

Chapter Breaks:
The film features 8 chapter breaks over 70 minutes, which averages one chapter break every 9 minutes minutes.

Content:
The main menu of the disc features a beautiful soundtrack and an “easy to use” English (and Chinese) menu. There are three options on the main menu:
1)Play All
2) Subtitles
3)Special Features

The subtitle menu itself features three options:
English
Chinese
Off

The Special Features option features “The Making of Elysium,” which shows the producers and animators working on the film, designing environments, characters, animation cells (on computer), and other necessary parts of making an anime. The interesting part is the “motion capture” where they use live actors and capture their movements using specially designed equipment. It is amazing…

The storyline of Elysium is based in a future world where an alien race from Elysium has sent an emissary to earth. The emissary is killed and the Elysium race decides to invade earth. Only four earthlings piloting specially made war robots (mecha) can save mankind!

Conclusion:
Overall, Elysium is a well made computer generated animation film. It is no where near as well made (or funded) as some other computer generated anime like Final Fantasy: TSW and Animatrix, but it features a cool idea with some fairly decent effects.

If you are a fan of mecha and futuristic sci-fi and computer generated anime, Elysium may be right for you!!
